Mission and Leadership

The Society for the Study of Celiac Disease is a society of medical, scientific and allied health professionals in the field of celiac disease. The organization’s overall mission is to advance the fields of celiac disease and gluten-related disorders by fostering research and by promoting excellence in clinical care, including diagnosis and treatment of patients with these conditions.

The SSCD has been established to

  • Organize educational, training and scientific conferences, workshops and similar gatherings for the medical and scientific communities;
  • Encourage careers in the field of celiac disease by promoting education, training and mentoring of clinical practitioners and researchers;
  • Develop funding by private and public sources for research, and to use a peer-review process to award grants;
  • Provide leadership in the development of clinical and research protocols with the goal of assuring early detection, proper treatment and scientific progress;
  • Provide patient-support groups and other relevant organizations with medically and scientifically sound information about the causes, diagnosis and treatment of celiac disease and gluten sensitivity;
  • Contribute medical and scientific guidance to government policy and regulatory deliberations;
  • Engage in information exchanges and discussions of mutual interest with the pharmaceutical and medical-testing industries, and
  • Take any and all other actions that the General Assembly and Executive Council deem appropriate for advancing the detection, treatment and science of celiac disease and gluten sensitivity.
